4. Post-deal Development

Once a deal has been concluded, the real work begins!

In the case of a license agreement, there may be further research required to support the licensee’s activities. In addition, the relationship established during a licensing negotiation can often lead on to further collaboration in other related areas. Melbourne Ventures staff can assist with that relationship management, and help identify new opportunities for commercial deals as they arise.

In the case of a start-up, there are the challenges of managing an early-stage company, meeting investors’ expectations, and working on locating the next round of funding to support the company’s growth. Melbourne Ventures staff have experience in helping to manage the commercial side of such early-stage companies, and can provide this service on a fee for service basis. This has worked well with a number of companies in recent years, as it enables the inventor to focus on doing what they do best, whilst at the same time bringing a business development focus to the company at the earliest stage.

One area in which Melbourne Ventures has been active in supporting new start-ups is with securing grants from a range of agencies who seek to support entrepreneurial business development. For example, we have good relationships with representatives of the Federal Government’s Commercial Ready Program, as well as its COMET program, and can assist with the preparation of applications for these programs.
